  • Cars can't see cats

The RSPCA estimates more than 80,000 cats are killed by cars each year. Most happen within a few streets of home, between dusk and dawn. A fence isn't a deterrent for a determined cat, but netting on top of one is a big help at keeping them in.

  • Councils are getting strict

Many Australian councils now have cat curfews. Some have full 24-hour containment laws. Fines for repeat breaches can run into hundreds of dollars. Keeping your cats in your yard isn't just safer, in a growing list of Aussie suburbs, it's the law.

  • It protects native wildlife

Free-roaming pet cats kill thousands of native animals every year: birds, lizards, small marsupials. Most cats hunt instinctively, even when well-fed. Keeping them in your yard is the single biggest thing you can do to protect the wildlife around you.

What's in the box

Each kit ships with everything you need to install one of our nets in a typical Aussie backyard. Designed in Melbourne, and manufactured to our own specifications, plus its been tested by our own cats.

  • Nylon-coated steel fibres: claw-proof, bite-proof and weather-proof. UV-stable, light enough to install solo (though 2 people is better) and strong enough that even a determined cat will give up. 10m X 4m in size.

  • 30 metres of weatherproof rope: for securing the netting and helping to close gaps along uneven fence lines.

  • Wall plugs and stainless screws: for fixing the J-brackets to brick, render, or hardwood.

  • High-strength UV pull ties: the small detail that makes or breaks an install. We include 30, but if you need more, your local hardware store can help.

  • Custom J-brackets: designed by us when nothing else worked. They hold the netting in the curved profile that stops cats vaulting the top. Included with our Standard and Complete kits.

Install in an afternoon

The kit is designed to be installed by 1-2 people with basic DIY skills. Most installs take 3–5 hours but this depends on your situation. Typically, you won't need a tradesperson. You will need a power drill though.

1. Plan your perimeter
Walk your area. Identify gaps, climbable spots, and where the netting needs to curve at the top. Installs cover 10 metres of perimeter. We include a basic install guide and checklist with every order.

2. Mount the brackets
Drill J-brackets into your fence, ideally at 2m intervals. They angle inward to create the curved overhang that stops cats vaulting. For brick or rendered walls, use the included wall plugs. It is a good idea to sit the netting behind the bracket prior to securing the bracket.

3. Secure the netting
The whole thing should feel stable but slightly loose. Netting that is pulled super tight can give cats a foothold. A slightly loose net makes it harder to do that.

Watch the install video

Filmed in our own backyard, on our own fence. Sadie (our cat) supervised.

Hi, we're Alyce and Shaun

We're a Melbourne couple who've lived forty years in the south-eastern suburbs, owning many cats in that time.

Two of them are in our logo: Cedric, our cream ragdoll who passed away peacefully at age thirteen, and Sadie, the black tuxedo who's still with us and still occasionally tries to leap the fence.

Just For Cats started because of one of Sadie's escape attempts. Twenty minutes searching the neighbours' yard in the dark for a black cat.

That was when we knew we needed something and decided to do it ourselves. We designed what we wanted, sourced a manufacturer and tested many different versions on Sadie until finally she gave up trying to escape. We knew we'd found the solution.

Just For Cats is the kit we wish we'd been able to buy years ago. Tested by the cat that started it all. We run the whole thing ourselves. When you email us, you're emailing Alyce or Shaun directly.

FAQs

Is it easy to install myself?

Yes, for most people. The kit is designed for 1-2 people with basic DIY skills and a power drill. Most installs take 3-5 hours. We include a basic install guide with every kit, plus there's a video on the website that shows a basic install using the J-brackets.

What's the warranty?

The netting is nylon-coated steel fibre, UV-stable, weatherproof. It has a 5-year warranty. Bear in mind that if you damage the net during the install or cut the net to better suit your situation, the warranty is voided. Shipping costs back to us are at your own expense. The J-brackets also have a 5 year warranty.

Who runs the business?

We're Alyce and Shaun, a couple in Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs. We started Just For Cats because of one specific cat, Sadie, loved escaping (you can read the longer story on the Our Story page). When you email us, you're emailing Alyce or Shaun directly.

Do you ship Australia-wide?

Yes. We ship Australia-wide. Free shipping on orders over $240. Below that, shipping is calculated at checkout based on your location. We don't currently ship internationally.

What if I'm not happy?

You have 30 days from delivery to return the kit for a full refund. You cover return shipping; we cover everything else. No forms, no interrogation. Just email us.

Will it look ugly?

The netting is a black mesh which means from a distance it visually blends quite well. Up close you can see it but from across the yard you usually can't. We've installed it on our own fence and our neighbours haven't noticed. It does depend on your situation though.

Will it keep my cat in?

Provided you close the gaps, it should. Cats are wily. They'll find any opening you leave them. The single biggest reason netting doesn't work is poor planning, not weak material. Our kit is designed so the curved overhang stops vaulting and the nylon-coated steel fibre netting makes getting any leverage very hard for a cat, but the install matters as much as the product. For the overhang, you need the J-brackets.

Will one kit be enough for me?

Our standard kit covers 40 metres squared of area (10M x 4M). If your perimeter line is longer, you can buy additional netting and J-brackets separately.

What if I'm not that handy?

You don't need to be a tradesperson, but you do need to be comfortable using a power drill. If drilling into brick or rendered walls makes you nervous, ask a friend or even hire a someone through Airtasker.
